HGU (Home Gateway Unit)
A home gateway unit is a home networking device, used as a gateway to connect devices in the home through fiber to the Internet. HGU normally provides the variety features for the home network including NAT/NAPT, Routing, Firewall, PPPoE, DHCP client/server etc. By providing such features, the HGU can help the subscribers setup their own home network with a quite easy way. The Wi-Fi access capability is also very popular to be integrated in HGU products. HGU is used to cover multi-function networking appliances used in homes, which combine a PON ONU, a network switch, providing LAN switching, a consumer-grade router, and a wireless access point. In the past, such functions were provided by separate devices. Since subscriber needs 2 boxes of the devices for the home network, it is often called 2-box solution.
By technological convergence, they have merged into a single device currently. The solution, normally called 1-box solution. The 1-box solution, by combining 2 devices to 1, can provide optimized network and better performance with a more effective cost. By using the HGU, the users can connect all smart equipments at home, not only including the personal computers, but also the Set-Top Box, Mobile phones, Consumer Electronics devices.
SFU (Single Family Unit)
SFU customer premise devices are designed for single indoor residential applications. It addresses the demand for bandwidth intensive services, such as high definition television (HDTV), video-on-demand (VOD) and games on-line. It can be configured to seamlessly deliver voice-over-IP and high speed Internet access via a single fiber optic connection to the home.
